Real stories. Real families. Real hope.
The heart of Uplifting Visions lives in the voices of those who have walked through the fire and come out whole — still holding their children's hands.
From the Shadows to the Stage: A Mother's Promise
Twenty-two years ago, I sat in Valley State Prison, five weeks pregnant and facing a six-year sentence. I was terrified, hopeless, and alone. My only lifeline was prayer. At seven and a half months pregnant, my prayers were answered when the warden offered me a chance to help open a mother-infant program. Three nights later, I heard the words that saved us: "Henderson, roll up."
My beautiful Zaleah was born in Alameda County, not separated by glass, but safe in my arms. We moved to Pomona to launch a prototype women's center, and I decided to build our future. With my six-month-old baby on my hip, I fought for my business degree at Mt. SAC. When Zaleah was six, we walked out of those doors together — free.
Freedom was its own mountain. I got married and had my younger children, Brooklynn and Maurice, but the man I trusted betrayed me and left me for dead. Instead of breaking, I relocated us to Carlsbad to build a fortress of love.
I didn't have to build it alone. When Brooklynn was just weeks old, I met my beautiful mentor from HUG Organization. She blessed our family with unconditional love and stepped in to guide me like a stern, real mother. I still stand by her side volunteering today.
Grounded by faith in our LDS and Baptist congregations, I promised my kids the stability I never had. Brooklynn and Maurice are thriving, making me proud every day. And now, we are celebrating a breathtaking victory. On June 12, 2026, Zaleah — the baby who started her life in the system — is graduating from UCLA, the very first in our family.
To any woman in a dark place: do not give up. Your current situation is not your final destination. Let the fierce love you have for your children make you undeniable.
It has always been me and my kids against the world, and looking at them today, I know the fight was worth every tear.
Do you have a story to share?
Your voice can be the light for another mother walking through the dark. We would be honored to hear from you.
